🤔 that document could do with tweaking as Linguist and the syntax highlighting engines are completely independent and that only applies to the syntax highlighting engine. The syntax highlighting engine that parses the TextMate compatible grammars uses PCRE (aka the 8.45 one, not PCRE2) and it pulls this in from Debian's Linguist itself is written in Ruby so you could use Oniguruma regexes, however when it comes to any of the regexes in the |

What version of PCRE does Linguist use?
the docs link the PCRE website
which then goes on to state that there are many PCRE versions...
