Install the extension in Chrome
- Open Chrome.
- Go to
chrome://extensions/. - Enable "Developer mode" at the top right.
- Click "Load unpacked" and select the folder you downloaded (if using the unpacked version).
Or, if you install from the Chrome Web Store link provided on the releases page, just follow normal installation steps.

Enable AI features (optional)
If you want AI grouping, you will need to connect your preferred AI provider in the settings.
This handles GPT, Claude, Gemini, or Ollama.

Use tabpilot
Once installed, tabpilot works automatically. Open many tabs and see them grouped by topic or rule.
Use the tabpilot icon next to the address bar to open the menu, change settings, or refresh groups.
Click the big green button or the link below to open the tabpilot release page on GitHub.
This page lists all available versions and files.
Look for the newest release near the top of the page. It will have a version number and a date.
You will see one or more files ending with .zip or .crx.
- If you want to install the extension normally, download the
.crxfile (Chrome extension package), if available. - If you want to load it unpacked, download the
.zipfile and extract it on your computer.
Save your chosen file in a location you can find easily, like your Desktop or Downloads folder.
- Open Chrome.
- Type
chrome://extensions/in the address bar and press Enter. - Turn on "Developer mode" in the top-right corner.
- If you have a
.crxfile: Drag and drop the.crxfile into the extensions page. Click “Add extension” when prompted. - If you have a
.zipfile: Extract the.zipto a folder. On the Chrome extensions page, click "Load unpacked." Select the folder with the extracted files.
Once installed, you will see the tabpilot icon next to the address bar. Click it to open the extension menu.
tabpilot runs quietly in the background. As you open tabs, it groups them automatically. You do not need to press buttons or change anything for basic use.
The extension uses over 155 rules to group tabs. Rules include things like grouping by domain name, page content, or tab similarity.
To use AI:
- Open the tabpilot menu from the icon.
- Go to the Settings tab.
- Choose an AI provider: GPT, Claude, Gemini, or Ollama.
- Enter your API key or connection details.
- The extension uses AI to group tabs based on content, topics, or your preferences.
You can access the settings anytime via the tabpilot extension icon.
- Enable/Disable AI features.
- Change grouping rules. Choose if you want specific rules to apply or not.
- Privacy options. Confirm your data stays local or connect to AI securely.
- Automatic updates. Let the extension update without manual steps.
No need to adjust settings out of the box. The defaults suit most users.
- If the extension does not appear, check you installed it correctly under
