DATA DESCRIPTION: We provide annual maps and gridded layers of global MPA coverage from 1958 to 2025, constructed from the ProtectedSeas Navigator database. The dataset includes both comprehensive MPA coverage and a strict protection subset, delivered as shapefiles, NetCDF, and GeoTIFF formats at 1° and 0.25° spatial resolutions.
/Dissolved_mpa_shapefiles -> Contains dissolved mpa shapefiles (i.e. removes overlaps) for each year. Cumulative (i.e. up to a specific year) and dissolved (i.e individual year) sub-directories.
/Gridded_outputs -> Raster grids of 1 and 0.25 degrees with percent coverage of MPAs for each grid cell and each year. Includes netCDF, raster, and .csv formats. /all_years directories: All years in a single file (netCDF and .tif formats only) /yearly directories: Yearly files (.csv and .tif formats only)
/MPA_shapefiles -> Original MPAs from Protected Seas Navigator supplemented with MPAs from other sources (by Kelsey Roberts). Not dissolved, so some MPAs may overlap. Cumulative (i.e. up to a specific year) and yearly (i.e individual year) sub-directories.
