Migrate from optparse to argparse? #1636

Closed

Description

@hartwork

Hi!

I was wondering if there is interest or planning to migrate from optparse…

parser = optparse.OptionParser(usage=usage, description=desc, version=ver, epilog=epilog)

… to argparse? One motivation for that from a user perspective would be that --help output would become more colourful and friendly with Python >=3.14 by default. What do you think?

Best, Sebastian

    The CLI hasn't changed in many years and there are no plans for future changes. A refactor doesn't really offer any value at this point and would just be a refactor for refactoring's sake. So I don't really see any point.

    @waylan it's not a refactoring, it's a functional change — it adds color:

    @waylan what do you think? Should we close the issue?
