### Vanilla-like experience

!!! note "Requires Paper 1.19 or higher"

The `PAPER_VANILLA_LIKE` option is only available for Minecraft version 1.19 and above.

For more technical players or those seeking a gameplay experience closer to vanilla Minecraft, `PAPER_VANILLA_LIKE` environment variable is provided. When set to `true`, it automatically configures Paper to minimize Bukkit/Paper-specific optimizations and changes that differ from vanilla gameplay.

This applies all recommended configuration changes across `server.properties`, `paper-global.yml`, `paper-world-defaults.yml`, and `spigot.yml` based on [PaperMC's official vanilla-like experience guide](https://docs.papermc.io/paper/vanilla/).

!!! example

Using `docker run`:

```shell
docker run ... -e TYPE=PAPER -e PAPER_VANILLA_LIKE=true ...
```

Using a compose file:

```yaml
environment:
TYPE: PAPER
PAPER_VANILLA_LIKE: "true"
```

!!! info "Patch merging"

The vanilla-like patches are applied before any user-provided `PATCH_DEFINITIONS`, allowing you to override specific settings if needed.

!!! warning "Not 100% vanilla"

While this configuration gets very close to vanilla Minecraft, it's not possible to achieve a completely identical experience due to how the Bukkit API is implemented in Paper. For an exact vanilla experience, Paper cannot be used.
