Description

This PR fixes #8125

Notes for Reviewers

This pull request resolves responsive layout breakages on tablet/medium viewports (~768px – 991px) and eliminates recurring console TypeError exceptions on the /community page:

  1. Email-Decode SVG Console TypeError:

    • Root cause: Cloudflare's injected email-decode.min.js runs document.querySelectorAll("a") and queries o.href.indexOf(...). Inside newcomers-map.js, navigation items inside <svg> were wrapped with <a> (SVGAElement). In the SVG DOM, .href is an SVGAnimatedString object ({ baseVal, animVal }) rather than a primitive string, throwing TypeError: o.href.indexOf is not a function 5 times on every page visit.
    • Fix: Replaced SVG <a> and <Link> tags with accessible <g role="link" tabIndex={0} aria-label="..."> elements utilizing Gatsby's navigate() for internal routes and window.open() for external links. Added a defensive polyfill in gatsby-browser.js for SVGAnimatedString.prototype.indexOf to safeguard against any third-party scripts querying SVG links site-wide.
  2. "Our Community Members" Background Cutoff:

    • Root cause: In src/sections/Community/community.style.js, a hardcoded linear-gradient (to bottom, ... 42rem, ... 42rem) was used on @media (max-width: 991px). On tablet viewports, the stacked content height is ~55rem, causing the green background to prematurely cut off through the text and across the middle of the yellow "Community Member Profile" button.
    • Fix: Removed the fixed-rem gradient; applied responsive container background fills on mobile/tablet viewports (secondaryColor on .community and black on .slider), ensuring complete background wrapping regardless of content height.
  3. Newcomers Map & Welcome Section Horizontal Overflow:

    • Root cause: <Row className="newcomers-section"> lacked wrapping on tablet viewports (768px–991px) because the grid row only wrapped below 760px. With each column styled with $xs={12} (100% width), both columns remained side-by-side, creating a 200% row width that overflowed horizontally and pushed the welcome text off-screen.
    • Fix: Added flex-wrap: wrap; align-items: center; to .newcomers-section in community.style.js and explicitly added flexWrap: "wrap" to <Row> in src/sections/Community/index.js.

Verification

Verified locally using npm run develop:lite across multiple viewport widths (1200px Desktop, 980px, 950px, and 910px Tablet):

  • Console: Verified 0 console errors; TypeError: o.href.indexOf is not a function is completely eliminated.
  • Accessibility: All 5 SVG map destinations are accessible, focusable via keyboard (Tab + Enter), and include explicit aria-label attributes.
  • Community Members Section: Background fully encapsulates the heading, body copy, and button across all tablet sizes.
  • Newcomers Section: Map and welcome text stack vertically and center cleanly with zero horizontal scrolling or clipping.
  • Code Quality: Passed eslint with 0 errors and 0 warnings.

Testing (After Changes)

1. Tablet Viewport (950px) - Community Members Section

Green background wraps all content and button cleanly without cutoff:

fixed_tablet_950_community_members

2. Tablet Viewport (950px) - Newcomers Guide & Map

Map and welcome copy stack vertically with proper centering and zero horizontal overflow:

fixed_tablet_950_newcomers_welcome

3. Tablet Viewport (910px) - Responsive Alignment Verification

Consistent stacked layout across smaller tablet widths:

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 75a00

Map destinations can open the wrong route on prefixed previews, and middle-click no longer works. These are bounded navigation issues, but the links should be corrected before merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 86044

The reviewed links use fixed destinations, and links opening new tabs isolate the original page. No new access to privileged systems was identified. The browser-wide change and limited visibility into deployment behavior keep the risk above minimal.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The prototype change can affect browser scripts beyond the Community page, but it does not itself add server-side authority or a new destination.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The reviewed navigation changes do not show an attacker-controlled URL reaching Gatsby navigation or window.open. No introduced attack path is established by the available source.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Handbook navigation opens fixed paths with noopener,noreferrer, limiting access from the opened tab to the originating page.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The browser-wide method is conditional, but the supplied production evidence does not resolve its ordering relative to the third-party script it is intended to accommodate.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Verify production script ordering and consider whether the compatibility method can be scoped more narrowly than the site-wide SVG prototype.

Explanation

The title names the two main fixes: tablet responsive layout breakages on the Community page, and the email-decode SVG console error. The raw summary and objectives match both. The title is specific and short, and it stays within a single sentence. It is slightly long at 85 characters, but this does not reduce its clarity.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes meet the coding objectives in issue [#8125]. The newcomers map replaces SVG anchor and Link wrappers with focusable g elements and preserves navigation with navigate() and window.open(). The Community Members layout wraps at widths up to 991px and applies responsive backgrounds. The newcomers section also wraps its content. These changes address the reported console error and tablet overflow conditions.

Hi @sh011, thanks for the contribution and for addressing the issues reported in #8125!

Overall, the solutions for the tablet layout breakages and the Cloudflare SVG console error look solid:

  • Removing the fixed-rem gradient in favor of container background fills cleanly resolves the background cutoff across all tablet heights.
  • Adding wrapping to the newcomers section resolves the horizontal overflow on intermediate viewports (768px–991px).
  • Replacing the SVG <a> and <Link> tags with <g role="link"> elements successfully prevents Cloudflare’s email-decode.min.js from throwing TypeError: o.href.indexOf is not a function, and the addition of keyboard accessibility (tabIndex={0}, Enter/Space, :focus-visible) is very thoughtful.

Before this can be merged, please address the following items:

1. Fix ESLint Indentation Error in newcomers-map.js (Required)

Running npm run lint / npx eslint src/sections/Community/Newcomers-guide/newcomers-map.js fails with an indentation error on line 37:

/src/sections/Community/Newcomers-guide/newcomers-map.js
  37:1 error Expected indentation of 2 spaces but found 8 indent

Diff to fix:

   #newcomers-guide {
     cursor: pointer;
     path {
       fill: ${(props) =>
-        props.handleHover ? (props) => props.theme.secondaryColor : "#3c494e"};
+  props.handleHover ? (props) => props.theme.secondaryColor : "#3c494e"};
       transition: 0.5s;
     }

(Running npm run lint:fix should also format this automatically).

2. Remove Redundant Inline Style in src/sections/Community/index.js

In src/sections/Community/index.js:

<Row
  style={{
    flexWrap: "wrap",
  }}
  className="newcomers-section"
>

Since community.style.js already applies flex-wrap: wrap; and align-items: center; directly under .newcomers-section, the inline style={{ flexWrap: "wrap" }} on <Row> is redundant. Please remove the inline style prop to keep our styles centralized in styled-components:

- <Row
-   style={{
-     flexWrap: "wrap",
-   }}
-   className="newcomers-section"
- >
+ <Row className="newcomers-section">

3. Handle Cmd / Ctrl + Click for Navigation (Optional Improvement)

Currently, onClick={() => navigate(...)} will navigate in the current tab even if a user tries to open the link in a new tab via Cmd + Click (macOS) or Ctrl + Click (Windows/Linux).

You can preserve standard browser behavior with a quick helper:

const handleNavigate = (path) => (e) => {
  if (e.metaKey || e.ctrlKey) {
    window.open(path, "_blank", "noopener,noreferrer");
  } else {
    navigate(path);
  }
};

And use onClick={handleNavigate("/community/meshmates")}.

4. Resolve Merge Conflicts / Rebase on master

The branch currently has conflicts with the latest master. Please pull the latest changes from upstream/master, resolve any conflicts, and push an update so CI checks can pass cleanly.

Once these updates are pushed, ping us here and we will be happy to get this merged. Thank you!

Prefix both handbook URLs before opening them.

With a nonempty PATH_PREFIX, these direct window.open calls use domain-root routes. They bypass handleNavigate, so both handbook destinations can fail on prefixed preview builds. Wrap both paths with Gatsby's withPrefix.

Preserve middle-click navigation on the map links.

When a visitor middle-clicks this group, the browser dispatches auxclick, not click. The group has no href or onAuxClick, so the MeshMate destination does not open. The other replacement groups have the same behavior. Restore a native link destination where possible, or handle middle-click activation for each group. (w3.org)
