Infrastructure: Land the desktop test driver on main #4258

Description

@JasonVMo

Goal

Land the public Desktop Driver and shared Storybook orchestration as maintained repository packages on main. Parent: #4275.

Status - 2026-10-01

Completed; remains closed. PR #4294 landed the public package and integration on August 31, 2026. Later native-provider and WDIO improvements do not reopen the package-landing milestone.

Delivered

  • Public @fluentui-react-native/desktop-driver workspace, explicit exports, TypeScript project-reference integration, package/protocol/fake-host tests, and publishing metadata.
  • Client-neutral W3C service, typed clients, WebdriverIO integration, target/session/input ownership, bounded agent/CLI operations, and confined evidence APIs.
  • Shared @fluentui-react-native/storybook-desktop CLI/orchestration and companion runtime, with app-owned native identity and story discovery.
  • Platform manifests, authenticated/correlated story readiness, native story-root verification, and exact owned app/service lifecycles.
  • macOS, Windows Fabric, and Win32 Paper consumer integration and initial authored Button/Checkbox/Input coverage.
  • Supported public documentation and one declared Storybook workflow rather than branch-only/app-local tooling.

The legacy Storybook Windows Jest harness was retired in the same delivery. Its remaining regression-parity work is now #4347, not an obligation to resurrect the removed harness.

Subsequent delivery and open follow-ups

PR #4306 delivered source-built native providers (#4257); PRs #4313/#4314 added named WDIO tests and native focus improvements. The package is Appium-independent.

#4345 tracks production release qualification, #4349 tracks required native CI, and #4343/#4348 track complete accessibility and capture qualification. Fake-provider passes remain contract evidence only.
