Summary

Ports upstream CodexBar steipete#4730 (commit bf00709, "feat(spend): add session inspection with bounded selected-request loading") to Settings > Usage & Spend > Sessions.

  • The Sessions view is now a session inspector. It has a search box that matches the shown title or the session id, a sort picker (recent activity, tokens, cost) and an Ascending/Descending toggle. Sessions with no known value sort last, and ties fall back to latest activity and then id. Titles are already replaced by the backend under Hide personal information, so hidden titles can't be found through search.
  • Selecting a session opens a detail pane with input, cached input, output, total tokens and estimated spend, then the session's model requests grouped by turn. Usage that no turn owns is listed last as "Unattributed usage". Costs below one dollar keep up to six decimals, as upstream does. Tool activity is still shown and is labelled as having no cost.
  • New Tauri command get_codex_session_details(sessionId, historyDays, checkpoint), backed by CodexWorkspacesIndex::load_session_details in rust/src/codex_workspaces/session_details.rs. It reads only the rollout files that belong to the selected session, inside the same history window as the summary. Nothing is read until a session is selected.
  • The read is bounded. It fails with limitExceeded beyond 5,000 requests or 256 MiB of rollout data (checked from file sizes before parsing), and the pane shows "Request details exceed the limit." It compares the result with the session summary (the checkpoint). If the logs changed since the summary was built, it fails with sourceChanged, and the pane shows "Request details are unavailable. Refresh usage and try again." An unknown session fails with unavailable.
  • 17 new strings in all 10 locales, using the upstream translations.
  • docs/CONFIGURATION.md describes the Sessions view.

Differences from upstream:

  • The byte limit is 256 MiB of rollout files, not 8 MiB of request payload. Windows reads whole rollout JSONL files through the existing scanner, so the limit is applied to file sizes before parsing.
  • Not ported: opening the inspector from the menu, filtering tool activity per turn, and showing uncached input as a separate figure.
  • Known limitation: the spend summary comes from the workspaces snapshot, which can be up to 5 minutes old. After a session's logs grow, its details can show the unavailable message until that snapshot refreshes.

Checks

  • cargo fmt --all: no changes.
  • cargo clippy --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.
  • cargo clippy --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.
  • cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --lib: 5425 passed, 2 ignored, 22 failed on the first run. All 22 are child-process tests in login::tests and providers::grok::acp::process_tests. They need the fake_kiro_cli and fake_grok_acp examples, which --lib does not build. After cargo build --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --examples, those modules passed: 85 passed, 0 failed. Includes 6 new tests in codex_workspaces::session_details::tests and the locale tests.
  • cargo test --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml: 832 passed, 0 failed.
  • pnpm test -- --maxWorkers=4: 168 files, 1666 tests passed. New: src/lib/sessionInspector.test.ts (6) and src/surfaces/settings/tabs/SessionInspector.test.tsx (5).
  • pnpm run build: passed.
  • pnpm proof:check -- --only settings-usage-spend-session-inspector: PASS (3 screenshots). Chromium, mocked IPC.
  • pnpm proof:check -- --only settings-usage-spend-tool-activity: PASS (3 screenshots). Chromium, mocked IPC.

Desktop proof (debug build of this head, isolated proof home with synthetic Codex rollouts, CDP plus CUA):

  • Settings > Usage & Spend > Sessions lists the three synthetic sessions. Searching cccc leaves only that session. Sorting by tokens orders them bbbb, aaaa, cccc.
  • Session aaaa: Turn 1 has 2 requests and 8.8K tokens, Turn 2 has 7.7K tokens, and Unattributed usage has 1.1K tokens. The three costs add up to the session total ($0.031275).
  • Session bbbb (5,001 requests): "Request details exceed the limit."
  • Session cccc, with a request appended after the summary was built: "Request details are unavailable. Refresh usage and try again."
  • The window frame is DWM dark. Not covered: tray icon and tray menu pixels.
  • Same as upstream: the turn label says "1 requests" (upstream's string is %@ requests). Not from this PR: the session list time is the end of the UTC day, because the existing indexer records activity per day.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a session inspector to Usage & Spend with search and sorting by recent activity, tokens, or estimated cost.
    • Select a session to view usage totals and model requests grouped by turn, including unattributed usage; tool activity is shown separately without cost.
    • Request details indicate when they’re unavailable, have changed, or exceed loading limits.
  • Documentation
    • Updated Usage & Spend guidance with session search, sorting, detail availability, and loading limits.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for session search, sorting, cost display, and request details.

Port of upstream CodexBar steipete#4730 (bf00709): search and sort sessions, and load one session's model requests by turn, bounded and checked against its summary.

Walkthrough

The Usage and Spend Sessions view now supports searching and sorting Codex conversations and loading request-level details for a selected session. The Rust loader groups requests by turn, checks details against the session summary, and enforces request and file-size limits. The change also adds bridge support, proof scenarios, tests, documentation, and localized labels.

Changes: Session inspector

Layer / File(s) Summary
Session detail loading and validation
rust/src/codex_workspaces/*, rust/src/core/jsonl_scanner/*
The Rust loader reads matching rollout files within request and size limits, groups request usage by turn, and checks the results against a summary checkpoint. The Codex scanner supports an optional record limit. Tests cover grouping, limits, unavailable sessions, and changed sources.
Session detail command and bridge
apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/commands/codex_workspaces.rs, apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/main.rs, apps/desktop-tauri/src/types/bridge/settings.ts, apps/desktop-tauri/src/lib/tauri.ts, apps/desktop-tauri/src/proof/*
The Tauri command accepts a session ID, checkpoint, and optional history window. The bridge and proof routes expose the command and provide synthetic detail fixtures.

Full details: Provider Data Stays Siloed

Explanation

PASS. The PR adds Codex-only session inspection. UsageSpendTab passes codex_period_contract.conversations, which is populated from CodexWorkspacesIndex data. The new Tauri command and Rust loader read only Codex rollout files. The added bridge payloads contain session usage and request details, not provider identity, account labels, plans, or email. No new cross-provider ProviderId branching appears in shared code.

Full details: Secrets Handled Safely

Explanation

The changed code does not send credential material to logs, user errors, snapshots, or plain-text files. The new detail path returns usage counts, pricing, model names, timestamps, and session IDs; its errors are fixed codes (unavailable, sourceChanged, and limitExceeded). The only added file writes are synthetic test fixtures. No changed code deletes or overwrites credential files or keyring entries.

Full details: No Unapproved Dependencies

Explanation

The pull-request diff changes no Cargo.toml or package.json file, adds no npm, Yarn, or pnpm lockfile, and does not change a packageManager pin. The existing apps/desktop-tauri/pnpm-lock.yaml is unchanged. Maintainer approval is therefore not required.

Full details: Ui Changes Include Windows Proof

Explanation

The PR changes visible Settings UI in SessionInspector.tsx and replaces the Sessions view in UsageSpendTab.tsx. The PR description includes proof checks reporting 3 screenshots for the new session-inspector scenario and 3 screenshots for tool activity. The changed proof scenario defines list, detail, and unavailable screenshots.

@coderabbitai Fixed. The loader now passes its remaining request budget to the parser and stops early instead of buffering the whole file.

  • New JsonlScanner::parse_codex_bounded(..., max_records). parse_codex is a thin wrapper that passes None, so other callers are unchanged. The parse stops as soon as it holds more than max_records records and reports is_complete = false.
  • load_session_details_at passes max_requests - rows.len() for each file and returns LimitExceeded as soon as a parse holds more than that. Checkpoint validation runs only after every file has been parsed to its captured end within the budget, so a truncated prefix is never validated.
  • New test codex_bounded_parse_stops_one_record_past_the_cap. The existing fails_instead_of_truncating_when_limits_are_exceeded still passes.

Checks: fmt clean; clippy clean on both manifests; cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --lib 5448 passed, 0 failed; Tauri manifest 832 passed.
