Add a lead time for predictive pace warnings - #1035
The predictive pace warning fires the moment a straight-line estimate says a window won't last to its reset, and then only once per reset cycle (record_predictive_observation). Early in a weekly window that estimate is driven by a short burst of use, so the toast arrives days ahead ("Quota may run out in 5d 14h") and the cycle's one shot is spent; when the run-out actually gets close later in the week, nothing fires. The Mac app has the same rule, so there is no parity setting to port.
This PR adds a lead time, off by default:
Settings > Notifications > Warn when the run-out is within: Any time (default, current behavior), 6, 12, 24 or 48 hours. Stored as predictive_pace_warning_lead_hours (0 = any time, capped at 168), portable in the preferences document, and disabled in the UI while pace warnings are off.
NotificationManager::record_predictive_observation_within takes the lead in seconds. An observation whose ETA is further out than the lead is not a warning and does not arm the once-per-cycle dedupe, so the warning still fires later in the same cycle once the run-out comes within the lead. The existing record_predictive_observation delegates with no lead, so current callers and tests are unchanged.
cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml -- settings notifications locale: 357 passed. New tests: predictive_warning_waits_until_the_run_out_is_within_the_lead (5 days out with a 24 h lead → no warning and nothing armed; 20 h out → warns once), predictive_warning_without_a_lead_fires_however_far_out, and the settings round-trip/cap test
cargo test --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml: 832 passed
pnpm exec tsc --noEmit, pnpm run check-locale (1885 keys match), pnpm run lint (no new findings; the ctl warning at GeneralTab.tsx:152 is pre-existing)
pnpm exec vitest run for GeneralTab, bridge, App, FloatBar, TrayPanel, proof/coverage: 149 passed (new: select offers Any time first and saves 24; disabled while pace warnings are off; Alerts row order updated)
scripts\local-check.ps1: not run as a whole; the steps above cover its Rust and frontend parts
Thermo-nuclear review: not run with that skill
UI / tray proof
Not applicable — one select row in the Notifications pane, covered by the GeneralTab tests above; no tray, DWM, float bar or WebView2 behavior changes. The notification gate itself is unit-tested in rust/src/notifications/tests.rs.

CUA Driver could not be used; equivalent manual proof and explanation attached
Notes for reviewers
The lead applies to both the session and the weekly window. For the 5 h session window every choice ≥ 6 h is effectively "any time", which matches what a user would expect from a short window.
Choice list is intentionally short (6/12/24/48). Happy to make it a free number if you prefer; the backend already accepts 0–168.
Configure predictive pace-warning lead time with “Any time” or preset intervals of 6, 12, 24, or 48 hours. Warnings appear only when estimated run-out is within the selected window.
“Any time” remains the default and preserves existing warning behavior. The selector is unavailable when alerts are muted or predictive pace warnings are off.
Saved custom lead times are retained, with supported values capped at 168 hours. The setting is available in portable preferences and localized in multiple languages.
Documentation
Updated configuration guidance with the setting’s default and supported range.
The pace warning fires as soon as a straight-line estimate says a window
won't last to its reset, and only once per cycle. Early in a weekly
window that means a toast days ahead ("may run out in 5d 14h") and then
silence for the rest of the week, when the run-out actually gets close.
Add Settings > Notifications > Warn when the run-out is within (Any
time, 6, 12, 24 or 48 hours; `predictive_pace_warning_lead_hours`, 0 =
any time). With a lead set, an observation whose ETA is further out is
not a warning and does not arm the once-per-cycle dedupe, so the
warning still fires later in the cycle once the run-out comes within
the lead. The default keeps the previous behavior.

Adds a setting that controls how soon before predicted run-out a pace warning can appear. The setting defaults to Any time, supports lead times up to 168 hours, and is available in desktop settings and portable preferences.
Changes: Pace warning lead-time setting
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Define and persist the lead-time setting rust/src/settings.rs, rust/src/settings/raw.rs, rust/src/settings/preferences_document.rs, rust/src/settings/tests.rs, docs/CONFIGURATION.md
Adds a default of 0 hours, caps values at 168 hours, validates portable preference values, and documents the setting.
Apply the lead time to predictive warnings rust/src/notifications.rs, rust/src/notifications/tests.rs
Predictive warning checks use the configured lead time. An ETA beyond the lead is not recorded, so a later in-window observation can trigger the warning.
Expose and edit the setting in desktop settings apps/desktop-tauri/src/types/bridge/settings.ts, apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/src/commands/..., apps/desktop-tauri/src/surfaces/settings/tabs/GeneralTab.tsx, apps/desktop-tauri/src/i18n/keyGroups/core.ts, rust/src/locale/*, apps/desktop-tauri/src/**/*test*, apps/desktop-tauri/src/test/fixtures.ts, apps/desktop-tauri/src/proof/fixtures/common.ts, CHANGELOG.md
Adds the setting to bridge types and settings updates. The selector offers Any time, 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours. Locale strings and test fixtures are updated.

Full details: Provider Data Stays Siloed
Explanation
The change adds one global lead-time setting and applies it to the existing predictive warning path. It does not add provider/account identity, plan, label, or email data to UI, payloads, logs, or storage. The ProviderId::Claude | ProviderId::Codex gate in rust/src/notifications.rs is unchanged from the base revision; the new code only delegates to the extracted method and applies the lead. Settings persistence contains only the numeric lead-time value.
Full details: Secrets Handled Safely
Explanation
The pull request adds a numeric lead-time preference, notification gating, UI controls, locales, and tests. The added code does not log, display, snapshot, or write any token, cookie, API key, OAuth credential, or authorization header. The oauth:person@example.com values are existing test identity fixtures, not credentials. The diff adds no credential-file or keyring deletion or overwrite.
Full details: No Unapproved Dependencies
Explanation
The pull-request diff changes no Cargo.toml, package.json, pnpm-lock.yaml, yarn.lock, or package-lock.json files. It also does not change a packageManager declaration. Therefore, the PR adds no unapproved dependency, lockfile, or pinned pnpm version change.
Full details: Ui Changes Include Windows Proof
Explanation
The pull request changes user-visible Windows settings UI. GeneralTab.tsx adds the “Warn when the run-out is within” selector and its disabled state. The PR description provides only a test-based “Not applicable” note and explicitly says no visual proof is attached. It does not include screenshots or a proof note from a fresh Windows build.
Resolution

- Line 287: Update the out-of-lead branch around the lead_seconds and eta check
to retain the warning cycle key when the prediction remains valid in the same

preventing the same cycle’s warning from firing again when ETA returns within
the lead.

Thanks for this. A lead time is a good fit for the problem you describe, and the default keeps today's behavior.
Two things before we can merge:
Duplicate warning in one cycle (confirmed). In record_predictive_observation_within, the retain that clears this provider/identity/window key runs before the new lead check. So an in-lead warning fires and arms the key, then an out-of-lead observation clears it and returns false. When the ETA comes back within the lead, the same cycle warns again, with a second toast and sound. One fix is to return early on a valid but out-of-lead ETA before the retain, so a sent warning stays armed. Recovery (will_last_to_reset) and a new cycle still clear it as they do now. Please add a test for the sequence in-lead → out-of-lead → in-lead in one cycle, expecting one warning.
Saved value outside the presets. The backend accepts 0–168, but the select only offers Any time, 6, 12, 24 and 48. A value such as 168 from imported portable preferences shows as no option, or looks like "Any time". Please add an option for the current value when it isn't a preset, the way the spend-period select in UsageSpendTab.tsx does (if (!options.includes(value)) options.push(value)).
The branch is also behind main; please merge main in. CircleCI doesn't run on fork PRs, so we'll run the -Slice ci checks on our side before merging.
An observation whose ETA is still heading for a run-out but further out
than the lead now returns before the dedupe key is touched. Before, it
cleared the key, so a warning sent in the lead, an out-of-lead refresh
and a return into the lead toasted twice in one cycle. Recovery and a
new cycle still clear the key.
Show a saved lead that is not a preset (for example 168 hours from
imported preferences) as its own option in the select, like the spend
period picker does.

Thanks for the review — both fixed in 0385ff8, and main is merged in (8e0d5c6).
Duplicate toast: an observation that is still heading for a run-out but further out than the lead now returns before the dedupe key is touched, so a warning sent in the lead stays armed; recovery (will_last_to_reset) and a new cycle still clear it as before. New test predictive_warning_drifting_out_of_the_lead_and_back_does_not_toast_twice covers in-lead → out-of-lead → in-lead (one warning), then recovery → in-lead (warns again).
Off-preset value: the select now adds the saved value as its own option when it isn't a preset (paceWarningLeadOptions), in numeric order, the way the spend-period picker does. Test: a saved 168 shows as 168 with options 0, 6, 12, 24, 48, 168.
Checks on the merged head: cargo fmt --check, clippy -D warnings on both crates, cargo test rust (settings/notifications: 333) and desktop (834), tsc, check-locale (1886), GeneralTab/bridge/coverage vitest (56).

Exercise check_predictive_pace with the configured lead.
The new tests call record_predictive_observation_within directly. They do not test that check_predictive_pace passes the configured lead from Settings. A regression that replaces that argument with None could therefore pass the current tests and emit a warning for a run-out beyond the configured lead.

Thanks, both fixes look right to me. The early return keeps a sent warning armed. Recovery and a new cycle still clear it, and the new test walks through the whole sequence. The select now shows a saved 168 as its own option.
One small optional item: CodeRabbit's note on notifications/tests.rs is fair. Every new test calls record_predictive_observation_within directly, so nothing checks that check_predictive_pace passes the lead from Settings. A test that goes through check_predictive_pace with, say, a 24 h lead and a 30 h ETA would cover that. It's fine as a follow-up if you'd rather not hold this PR.
Next we'll run the -Slice ci checks on our side against this head, since CircleCI doesn't run on fork PRs.
Validated 0385ff8 in a disposable Windows Sandbox (fresh MinGit, Node 24.18.0, pnpm 11.25.0, Rust 1.98.0, VS Build Tools), running main's local-check.ps1 -Slice ci step list rather than the branch's copy.
The frontend steps were rerun in the same sandbox after a pnpm-version problem in my test kit; the PR itself was unaffected. Thanks for the quick fixes on both review items.
