Summary

Closes #403.

Add a client_interceptors option to FlagdProvider and apply it to both gRPC resolvers. Callers can add metadata to RPC calls and streams, including the in-process SyncFlags stream. This supports infrastructure headers such as x-envoy-upstream-rq-timeout-ms: 0.

Changes

  • Support synchronous unary-unary, unary-stream, stream-unary, and stream-stream interceptors.
  • Keep the channel unchanged when no interceptors are set.
  • Log and retry unexpected EventStream and SyncFlags errors. Emit STALE during recovery and emit ERROR if a stream does not recover within retry_grace_period.
  • Emit READY and cancel the pending error when the RPC stream sends provider_ready or the in-process stream returns a flag update after recovery.
  • Keep client_interceptors after existing arguments to preserve positional calls.
  • Document interceptor use and metadata constraints.

grpc.aio interceptors are not supported. Metadata keys must use lowercase. An interceptor can add a duplicate flagd-selector key when the provider selector is set.

Tests

The change covers interceptor configuration, channel setup, metadata injection into SyncFlags, invalid interceptors, positional compatibility, retries after unexpected stream errors, and stream recovery events.

Flagd accepts optional synchronous gRPC client interceptors. Both gRPC resolvers apply them to generated channels. The RPC resolver also supports explicit channel credentials. Unexpected stream exceptions are logged, and active listeners retry after backoff.

Config accepts and normalizes client interceptors, and FlagdProvider forwards them. Tests cover defaults, tuple normalization, and positional compatibility. The README describes interceptor interfaces, metadata constraints, and stream retry behavior.

Both resolvers apply configured interceptors to generated channels. The RPC resolver uses explicit channel credentials when provided, before its TLS branch. Tests cover metadata injection, invalid interceptors, and raw channels when no interceptors are configured.

Both listeners catch unexpected exceptions. Active listeners log the exception and proceed to reconnect backoff; listeners shutting down log at debug level. Tests check reconnect behavior and use controlled stream shutdown.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 1a3e5

In either resolver mode, a failing interceptor can stop flag updates without notifying consumers that the provider is degraded. Correct both status transitions before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 1a3e5

Configured interceptors can fail while the connection remains healthy, leaving consumers unaware that flag updates have stopped. The impact is localized to providers using these callbacks; no remotely exploitable path was established. Transport credential selection is unchanged in the reviewed code.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: New interceptor failures can leave synchronization externally ready while updates stop. The catch-and-retry branches do not emit stale/error or reset connected; cached evaluations and the in-process flag snapshot remain available. This weakens failure containment and can permit control drift where applications use flags for security-sensitive behavior. The signaling gap predates the PR for other unexpected exceptions, but configured interceptors introduce an additional failure source that need not change channel connectivity.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated scope is the configured provider’s outbound Flagd calls and flag evaluations consumed by its application. Interceptors run with existing application-process authority. The evidence does not establish an independently attackable tenant, datastore, environment, or fleet-wide boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Interception wraps an already selected secure or insecure channel; the helper itself does not downgrade transport. In-process explicit credentials use grpc.secure_channel. RPC ignoring explicit credentials is present in both base and head, so it is not evidence of a newly introduced authentication bypass.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The watcher retains explicit terminal handling for configured fatal RPC statuses. Shutdown clears active, wakes reconnect waits, and closes the channel. These controls contain retries but do not repair readiness and freshness signaling for active generic failures.

Add a `sync_metadata` option to FlagdProvider / Config that appends
user-supplied gRPC metadata headers to every in-process SyncFlags call,
alongside the provider-managed flagd-selector header.

This lets callers inject infrastructure-specific headers on the
long-lived sync stream -- e.g. `x-envoy-upstream-rq-timeout-ms: 0` to
disable a proxy request timeout that would otherwise sever the
stream after its default deadline.

Keep `fatal_status_codes` as the last positional parameter in both
public constructors so existing positional callers are unaffected, and
add a regression test covering that ordering.

Thanks for this; the problem is valid, proxies killing the long-lived sync stream is a realistic issue.

My worry is that sync_metadata is pretty specific. Custom headers aren't really a flagd concept, and if we add this I suspect we'll keep getting "can we also set X on the channel" requests.

Since grpcio already handles this, what about exposing a gRPC interceptor option instead? An interceptor that adds your x-envoy-upstream-rq-timeout-ms: 0 header covers your case and any future one, without flagd growing a new option each time. It also matches what Java and Go already do, middleware stays outside the normal flagd options.

Docs:

Would you be up for reworking it that way? Happy to help.

Report EventStream failures as degraded.

If a configured interceptor starts raising after provider_ready while the channel remains READY, listen() only logs and retries. The provider can remain reported ready while EventStream updates stop. Add a listener-side stale and grace-period error transition. Cancel that timer when a later provider_ready message restores the stream.
