  • Spotless is still primarily a formatter, not a linter. But when formatting fails, it's more flexible to model those failures as lints so that the formatting can continue and ideally we can also capture the line numbers causing the failure.
  • Lint models a single change. A FormatterStep can create a lint by:
    • throwing an exception during formatting, ideally throw Lint.atLine(127, "code", "Well what happened was...")
    • or by implementing the List<Lint> lint(String content, File file) method to create multiple of them
• Support for line ending policy PRESERVE which just takes the first line ending of every given file as setting (no matter if \n, \r\n or \r) (#2304)

Not auto-merging this one — major bump (2.x → 3.0.0) of the formatter plugin, and the build was failing on the original CI run (now expired, but the failure was real). Spotless 3.0 ships changes to roundtrip serialization and step internals; running ./mvnw spotless:check may surface new violations or, more concerning, may re-format files differently if the underlying Eclipse formatter version it pulls in has shifted. Needs a manual rebase + run + diff inspection before merge.

See also: the existing Formatting/ponder-formatting.xml submodule pin determines the Eclipse formatter used; spotless 3.0 may interact with that pin in ways the 2.x→2.x bumps did not.

Leaving for human review. The 4 patch/minor bumps (#416, #420, #421, #425) have auto-merge enabled.

Closing as superseded — main already has spotless.version=3.4.0 (set during the Tycho 5 / Java 25 upgrade work; see pom.xml:48), which is past the 3.0.0 this PR proposed. The conflicts are because the version line was independently advanced beyond what this PR bumps to.
